I Hate And Love Working On A Site Redesign
March 21, 2010
Ok, I love and hate working on a new site redesign. I love the freshness of a new design, and I love seeing a new design come into fruition. The current design (well, the one you see right now on the blog, at the time of writing) took me about three months during the start of my first year of college to get up and running… and even then it wasn’t finished until, well, um, it never was finished. Sections such as the Downloads section remained blissfully unaware of it’s own incompleteness, and now it’s being redesigned for the eighth time.
See, I usually redesign either when I’m bored, when I feel the current design is stale, there’s something significantly wrong with the current way of doing things that makes it difficult for me to muster up the enthusiasm to update the site, I’m planning on showing my site to people important and want it to look tip top, or all of the above. In the current case, I would say that all of those apply, apart from the bored bit – there is no time for me to be bored anymore, sadly.
So why do I hate it? Well, case in point above with the downloads section, there is just so much of the site to do that I end up doing half of it and leaving the rest, going “Ah, well I’ll do it one day”. One day never comes. Up until November of 2009, I had been telling myself for two years that I was going to update my online store. I never did.
Now I start the whole process again, rolling out a new theme based on the new Store that I made in November. Here goes nothing…
